HoogHaar XL Readme Document

Thank you for downloading HoogHaar XL,
"hooghaar" is Dutch and means highair in english.
The main focus during development of this game is size, many levels.
And the fact that it should run smooth on an old, like 500 mhz pc.
If you compress this game it fits on a floppy disk and i have achieved my goal.

Word about HoogHaar XL:
This was originally intended as a package of extra levels for HH_Beer.
But i decided to only use the switch and teleport in hhxl, just like the original.
So i could not release this as an etra level package.
And it has become a complete stand alone game.

The story of HoogHaarXL:
Fishhead has once again stolen HoogHaar's hammer.
He has ran off with HoogHaar's beer truck. Something which made HoogHaar really mad.
But fortunately Fishhead is leaving a track of beer crates for HoogHaar to follow him.

1. Minimum Requirements:

This game runs fine on any pc that is capable of running windows.
But in order to run the game at decent speed, you should have:
a 800 mhz cpu, 128 MB ram, 8 MB video (supporting 32-bit colour) and 7 MB HD space.

The game has been tested on my old 450 mhz pc with win98SE and on my new laptop with winXP.
Both ran fine, although the 450 mhz sometimes is a little slow.

Other Operating Systems are not supported. You can get there via wine emulation.

2. Troubleshooting:

During testing I have had no trouble at all, but:

(a) If your keyboard, mouse or joystick doens't work, check if they are connected with the pc.

(b) This game uses windows direct sound, so if winwows has a problem with your soundcard,
the sound of this game might not work either.

(c) If you don't hear any sound at all, check if music and/or samples (crtl+m/crtl+s) in options are enabled.
Otherwise check if your speakersystem is properly connected.

(d) One known problem is a little bug in the desktop wallpaper. When changing resolution, the wallpapers dimensions can also change.
So there is no need to wonder why your desktop wallpaper is that small.

(e) If you think colours look dirty, it's probably because you're not displaying 32-bit colour on your desktop.

3. Improvements:

Improvements since the pre-release of HoogHaar XL:

- Removed the windows bar, it's annoying. (press crtl+y, if you want to select a joypad, but best played with the keyboard)
- HoogHaar and Fishhead shoot with bigger bullets.
- Four enemies added
- New save system (user won't notice it in game)
- Flying Fishhead takes up less cpu speed.
- HoogHaar character walks on the map.
- Initial lives increased to 6.
- Fixed a bug in the save-system.
- Fixed the bullet bug, if you ended a level (dead or teleported) with more than 21 bullets, you couldn't shoot anymore.
- Some code optimization (some minor changes, not the complete core).

New worlds:

- Graveyard
- City
- Factory
- Snow City
- Snowlands
- Castle

Improvements since HoogHaar beer:

- Three save files instead of continue or new game.
- Five extra enemies
- High colour graphics (although you won't notice much)
- Better help file
- More levels.

4. Saving

When you start the game, you will be asked to select a slot to play.
The games has auto saving, this means that when you've completed a level it will be saved in the selected slot.
The save file is also used to calculate a CheckSum.
When you receive a CheckSum Error, this means there is something wrong with your save file.
To fix this problem, you must delete the save file "xl.sav".
If you want to backup your save file, just copy the file "xl.sav".

5. Uninstalling:

Just delete the entire directory containing HoogHaar XL.
